Shrine of St. Therese: A Holy Place where miracles find You
by Winston Smith
The song Holy Place describes a peaceful, spirit-filled haven where one experiences God in many profound ways that most, if not all visitors can appreciate. Indeed, regardless of their faith few visitors leave the Shrine without having had a special, often unique, experience, often described as a feeling of peace. The images and lyrics within the YouTube music video illustrate the beauty of the Shrine and its surroundings and the spiritual encounter that one can have with our Lord. For me, the gift of the Shrine has been transformative in multiple ways, not the least of which is the miracle that was my composing the song Holy Place. The epiphany occurred following a teen retreat event held in the Shrine on a Saturday evening in the summer of 2012. I’m part of a music ministry and that evening I led a group of parents, siblings, and friends (community) into the Shrine Chapel in song. Some of the parents were from out of town and had never visited the Shrine. One of the parents commented how beautiful the Shrine was, to which this person responded: yes! it’s a real holy place. Without hesitation, I looked at the person who responded and said: “that’s the title of my next song.” I felt in that moment that God was directing me to compose a song about the Shrine. During the following week, the entire song came together: guitar chords, melody and lyrics. Part of the vision that manifested within me during the composition was a music video to share so others could become aware of this special Holy Place. This miracle is but one example of many, special personal experiences that occur regularly at the Shrine. Truly, the Shrine of St. Therese is where miracles find you. In reflection, I’ve sought understanding about why this occurs, at least for me. During visits to the Shrine, my senses become more acute, I’m overcome with peace, and I feel God’s presence as well as hear Him speaking to me. As a result, I have come to expect and wait for Him to speak, my heart softens, “the world” disappears, and He uses me to do extraordinary things.
